I had a wonderful conversation with Pastor Kern from Frankfurt, Illinois today. He is on the African Mission Task Force of the District.
He dropped this e-mail which encouraged to me to call him and speak about the work of the Gospel in Botswana.
I understand that you are heading to the Botswana Diocese for an undertaking in mission work. We are praying for you as you prepare to do that work and for safe travel to and from. As the chairman of the South Africa Mission Task Force for the Southern Illinois District, I would like to extend to you an invitation to our next meeting on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at the District Office. If you wish, we can meet somewhere along the way, and you can carpool with me. My phone number is (618) 218-7310. The Lord be with you!
Rev. Dave Kern
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church – West Frankfort
Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice , O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!
We decided to meet in Mt. Vernon on the 16th at 5:00 and go the rest of the way to the District Office together to meet with the task force. He mentioned the people in Botswana (he has been there) come from long distances to go to attend services and the services can be up to 4 hours long. The people come from such distances they expect to have an extended time around the Word and with the fellowship of each other. That is very encouraging to me.
I am anxious to meet Pastor Kern. His sincerity and love for the church in Botswana was so evident in his tone of voice. He also noted that smaller churches, like Our Savior in Carmi, are encouraged that small churches can really make a difference and a contribution even though it seems they are small and relatively unable to make a contribution. The efforts of Carmi and me will be an encouragement to those smaller churches that think they cannot make huge differences like large congregations might.
